Tips & Tricks to Keep Your Hardwood Floors Scratch-Free

You spend all kinds of money to have hardwood floors installed professionally, therefore it’s important that you take care of your new floors. As you know, damage to hardwood flooring takes away from its overall beauty. That is why we have put together a list of ways you can avoid damaging or ruining your floors.

Use Rugs to Protect High-Traffic Areas

Area rugs and mats are great ways to protect your hardwood floors- especially in high-traffic areas like your living room, foyer, home office, or front hallway. They are a great barrier against scratches from any sharp edges.

Avoid Wearing Shoes Inside

Shoes can be dangerous for floors, especially high heels and black rubber soles of shoes that are known for making scuffs, scratches, and dents. The best option is to walk around your home with socks or soft slippers!

Add Fabric Pads To Your Furniture

Adding fabric pads or glides are two of the best ways you can protect your hardwood floors from marks and scratches. If you don’t want to go out and buy these products, then use some of these DIY options: old socks, loose paper, business cards, etc. These will act as a protective barrier between your furniture and your floors.

Trim Your Pet’s Nails

Make sure your pet’s nails are trimmed regularly to avoid scratches on your floors. If you are not comfortable doing the trimming yourself, schedule an appointment with your dog or cat’s groomer.

We hope that you follow some - if not all - of these tips and tricks in order to keep your hardwood flooring pristine for years to come. There are two main types of hardwood used to make hardwood floorboards: solid and engineered. Both types are made from 100% wood, but each has its own advantages.

Solid Hardwood

Solid hardwood floors are made of solid wood. One board of solid hardwood is made from a single piece of wood. It has a gorgeous, unique finish and appearance. Solid hardwood floors can look great in any room; however, we typically would not install solid hardwood in the basement or kitchen because it will expand and contract based on the temperature and humidity.

Engineered Hardwood

Engineered hardwood is made from several pieces of wood, typically three to five, that are bonded together into layers. It is cheaper and easier to install than solid hardwood, and it is safe to install in almost all areas of the house!
